June 30 marked a turning point in Transurb’s history since 82% of the company has been acquired by Cockerill Maintenance & Ingénierie (CMI). CMI has thus become Transurb’s main shareholder, alongside SNCB (The National Railway Company in Beligum) and STIB (Brussels Intercommunal Transport Company).
After providing the first European line (Mechelen-Brussels, Belgium) with the first locomotive built on the continent in 1835, John Cockerill distinguished itself as a pioneer in the rail sector. Since then, his company has flourished and been involved in numerous rail and industrial projects worldwide.
Today CMI is an international engineering group headquartered in Seraing (Belgium). Five departments constitute this group: CMI Energy, CMI Defence, CMI Industry, CMI Environment, and CMI Services into which Transurb has been integrated.
CMI enjoys an excellent international reputation and plays an important role in the rail sector, as testified by its current order book of over 100 million euros. It is mainly specialised in rail equipment, services and maintenance. In collaboration with its new shareholders, Transurb aims to expand its business on the international stage and to contribute to the success of the group.
